A GRASSROOT ORGANISATION
Cabarete Sostenible evolved as a response to the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020. Confronted with the threat of famine in the municipality of Cabarete in March 2020, local organizations, community leaders, and volunteers teamed up to provide food aid in the short term and avert a humanitarian crisis.
From this ad-hoc association, the now well-established NGO Cabarete Sostenible quickly developed.
MAIN GOALS
EMERGENCY FOOD AID
Ongoing food aid packages are distributed monthly to vulnerable families while volunteers conduct the Cabarete Sostenible Questionnaire to identify at-risk people. The organization's food program feeds 100 households each month.
COMMUNITY & CIVIC AGRICULTURE
More than 250 volunteers participate in the newly opened community-led space for civic agriculture. First, the Community Garden was created, followed by a Community Farm and a Community Nursery. All areas work with organic and conscious farming techniques, borrowing from ancestral knowledge, permaculture, and regenerative forestry methods (Syntrotypical Systems Approach).
SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP
Education is provided through regular workshops and seminars, giving guidance and support to micro-enterprises and local projects.
EDUCATIONAL & SOCIAL PROGRAMS
The educational program will focus on environmentally conscious nutrition and sustainable and regenerative agriculture. It is intended to appeal to residents of the region as well as to international participants. The goal is to establish a more sustainable interaction with natural resources, especially in the food sector.
